This slightly unreal situation extended to 1/SWB, the right battalion of 1st Division. Despite the fact that the great weight of two attacks were taking place less than a thousand yards from its right front and rather closer on its left, it seemed to have little impact on the battalion. The CWGC records only two men killed on 22 October and one on 23 October, despite the fact that the positions were regularly shelled and came under small arms fire. To the rear, however, Langemarck was systematically being destroyed; battalion headquarters, discretion being the better part of valour, were removed from a house in the village to an open field.
